野生動物や植物の被害も深刻だ。シドニー大学は、ブラック・サマーで10億匹以上の動物が死んだと推定している。家畜を失った牧場主たちの経済危機も無視できない。 カンガルー島は、オーストラリアや島固有の動植物が数多く生息する自然豊かな島だ。油分を多く含むユーカリが群生しているため火が広がりやすく、ブラック・サマーでは過去最悪の被害を受けた。 復興のため立入禁止区域が今も残っているため、野生動物の観察や自然公園ツアーを目的とした観光客は減少したと耳にしていた。しかし、空港から降り立ってわずか10分ほどで、ユーカリの木に登った野生のコアラ2匹が出迎えてくれた。 ドライブをしていると、夕方ごろからどんどんカンガルーやワラビーが視界に入り始めた。数えきれないので、だいぶ序盤にカウントをやめた。 西側の砂浜ではアシカに囲まれ、東側の海岸ではまどろむオットセイの姿を永遠に眺めていられるような気がした。 立ち入りが許可されている被災地を歩いたところ、黒焦げになった木々の幹から、新しい命が芽生えていた。 地上部分は焼けてしまっていても、根が無事な木はこのように息を吹き返すという。 というのも、カンガルー島の生態系は、健全でいるために森林火災を必要としているからだ。 植物を食べる昆虫や小動物、外来種の動植物が増えすぎた場合も、定期的な森林火災は「数の調整役」を果たす。 次のブラック・サマーがまたすぐ来るのでは…。ヘイミッシュさんもティムさんも、それを一番懸念しているという。 「森がまた『燃えてもいい』状態になるまで、10年かかる」とティムさんも語った。 ブルーガムは成長が早い。ブラック・サマーで大ダメージを受けた在来種が育たないまま、カンガルー島のユーカリの生態系をブルーガムに「乗っ取られてしまう」危険性が示唆されている。 州と連邦政府は2021年、ブルーガムの苗の除去作業に260万オーストラリアドル（約2.5億円）を支出した。多くの地元ボランティアも、毎週末ブルーガムの苗を抜いて回っているそうだ。 「コアラは食事用の木、寝る用の木、移動途中に登る木と用途を分けて登っています。焦げた木の上にコアラがいたとしても、それは迷子になっているのでも降りられなくなっているのでもなく、ただ移動の途中なんです」 コアラにとって、今いる場所や自分のテリトリーから勝手に離されてしまうのは「トラウマ的な体験」になってしまうとティムさんは訴えた。 むしろ、森林火災と共にある生態系だからこそ、そのサイクルを今まさに目撃できるのではないだろうか。 2019〜2020年、オーストラリアで起きた過去最大級の森林火災「ブラック・サマー」。中でもカンガルー島では、4万頭のコアラが死滅し、島の半分が焼けた。今、新たに緑が芽吹いている現地を視察した。
